Low / No Debt After Graduation: Many foreign medical schools offer lower tuition than medical programs in the U.S., which can make them a popular choice for budget-conscious students. If your dream in life is to serve society as a physician, don’t let the cost of school get in the way. If money is your main concern, then consider XUSOM.
No Preconceived Notions: We don’t judge you based on your numbers alone, whether it is the MCAT, or your GPA. We look at your whole application package starting with your essays. If you show evidence of being a caring person, and having a real sense of what medicine is truly about, we want to learn more about you.
Small & Personable: We have a lot of nontraditional students who are getting a second chance in their careers, and we strive harder so they can succeed. These students are often making large sacrifices in order to fulfill their life’s goals and we hold their hand every step of the way. You will get to know the whole admissions team. Any one of our qualified team members will help you throughout the application process until you arrive in Aruba. Your success is our success.
US-Modeled Curriculum: XUSOM follows a rigorous, system-based curriculum. This means that teaching medicine is organized by the systems within the body, like the digestive or respiratory systems. This approach, which mirrors how medicine is actually practiced, gives you a big-picture look at the physiological, anatomical, and biochemical processes of an organ system all at once. Students spend 24 months (six semesters) in Aruba.
Clinical Rotation Opportunities in the United States: We provide quality medical rotations at renowned teaching hospitals in the United States and Canada. AT XUSOM, the first two years of basic science are done on the Aruba campus, while clinical rotations are done in U.S. hospitals. One has the advantage of the same clinical exposure and opportunities as the US medical students. Many past students cite this as an advantage in applying to U.S. residencies.
Global Perspective: When you’re a physician, you’ll have to work with patients from a variety of backgrounds. By studying at XUSOM, you connect with people from many different cultures. Apart from our diverse student body, engaging with the island’s citizens will give you a more global perspective. You’ll be thoroughly prepared to interact with any patient by the time you graduate.
Serene Environment: Location is just as important as you think. At a Caribbean medical school, you’ll be studying in a tropical paradise and that means no worries about crazy weather fluctuations. Aruba is a very well connected island with over 150 flights / week to the United States and Canada.
Small Class Size: The typical student to teacher ratio is 10:1. This makes it possible for XUSOM to maintain close student-teacher interaction. This is substantially different from other medical schools, located in the Caribbean, that are increasing their class sizes and subjecting their students to large, impersonal classroom experiences.
Dedicated & Approachable Faculty: Our dedicated faculty challenges our students with a preparatory curriculum, while supporting them in their individual growth. XUSOM faculty members do more than teach classes, they push students to fulfill their dreams.
USMLE Pass Rate: XUSOM students have a 93% pass rate on the USMLE Step 1, which is a leading performance indicator among international medical schools located in the Caribbean.
Motivated classmates: You will be surrounded by challenging and stimulating classmates who share your passion for medicine. Being in the medical field is tough, so having classmates that can help you see the light at the end of the tunnel is priceless.
