Xavier University School of Medicine as an institution of higher learning emphasizes and encourages research by both students and faculty. A research committee with eminent faculty members and a student member actively promotes research in the institution. An Institutional Review Board (IRB) has been created for review and approval of research proposals to encourage ethical research for our Caribbean medical school.

XUSOM has recently shifted to an integrated organ system-based curriculum and is emphasizing active, small group student learning. As medical educators we value and recognize the important role educational research can play in promoting more effective learning and research which directly impacts student learning is a priority area in XUSOM.

The research committee is also working towards collaborating with other institutions, Caribbean medical schools, and organizations to promote research and develop a research culture both within the institution and outside.

Student research is strongly encouraged and the curriculum aims to develop the ability to critically analyze scientific literature and conduct research among the students and throughout the Caribbean medical school.
