1. Will a degree from your school allow me to practice anywhere in the United States and Canada?
Xavier University School of Medicine is provisionally accredited by The Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and other Health Professions (CAAM-HP), recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO), and internationally recognized by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG). In addition, XUSOM is established with the Medical Counsel of Canada (MCC) and the Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS). With these few examples of our many approvals and accreditations, XUSOM graduates can practice anywhere in the U.S. and Canada.
2. How does your school rank in getting residency placements for graduates?
XUSOM graduates have obtained residency appointments in numerous medical specialties and subspecialties at world-renowned teaching hospitals and medical centers all over the U.S. and Canada. Our graduates have averaged a residency placement rate on par with U.S. medical schools, and significantly higher than other Caribbean medical schools.
3. What is the USMLE Step 1 first-time pass rate for your students?
XUSOM is committed to doing everything possible to help our students succeed on this incredibly important exam. Our USMLE Step 1 first-time pass rate is currently 93%, which is higher than most Caribbean medical schools.
4. What are the admissions requirements for your school?
XUSOM believes in a more holistic analysis of its candidates. The MCAT is merely one indicator of many to predict future performance, which is why it’s not required for admission. XUSOM evaluates each student’s entire body of work. The admissions committee will look at your G.P.A., letters of recommendation, highest degree earned, previous exposure to the medical field, volunteer work, commitment to the field of medicine etc. The interview will also play an important role in the admissions process.
5. How does your curriculum compare to that of the top medical schools in U.S?
The curriculum at XUSOM is fully integrated. We use a system-based approach which combines clinical skills, small-group discussions, and hands-on learning sessions. This process strives to enhance teamwork, professionalism, critical thinking, and reasoning skills. A second focus is on self-directed, lifelong learning. Problem Based Learning sessions are held once a week and strengthen the self-directed learning skills of our students.
6. How does your tuition compare to other medical schools?
XUSOM has always been committed to maintaining an affordable tuition, while still providing a high-quality medical education. One of our greatest achievements has been to make our prices low enough to allow determined students that could normally not afford medical school, to become great doctors. In fact, our tuition is quite a bit less than other Caribbean medicalschools , and significantly less than U.S. medical schools.
7. Does your school have loan programs in place for their students?
Xavier University School of Medicine is committed to making a quality medical education affordable for every student. Scholarships, loans, grants, and payment plan options are available to students and parents to assist in meeting educational expenses. In addition, XUSOM’s Canadian students are approved to apply for provincial student loans issued through the Canadian government.
8. Will your school’s environment allow for one-on-one relationships with professors?
This is one of the areas that certainly sets us apart from other medical schools. We are always attempting to maintain a student to teacher ratio of 10:1. This allows for individualized and interactive instruction for each student, enabling a working relationship with our faculty. Our professors make themselves available to our students, as much as possible. We attribute the fact that we’re able to assist our students in getting the residencies that are consistent with their professional, personal and academic goals, largely in part to our amazing faculty.
9. How does your campus meet the numerous demands of your students?
XUSOM’s facility has central air conditioning and is equipped with wireless technology throughout. Labs have state of the art equipment, charts, and anatomy museums. We also have real, human, plasticized cadavers for teaching and dissection (anatomical dissections are performed at the Dr. Horacio E. Oduber Hospital). All classrooms are equipped with LCD projectors. The library, staff rooms, conference rooms, administrative areas and recreation rooms are all located in one large facility. We have invested significantly in our campus, including the latest multimedia instructional technology and information systems. We are also planning to break ground on an entirely new facility, which will allow for a huge expansion to keep up with the demands of our students.
10. How does your school handle clinical rotations and placement?
Xavier University School of Medicine takes care of arranging all the clinical rotations. A clinical coordinator works closely with each student to determine the best locations and order in which they will complete their rotations. XUSOM’s clinical faculty also closely monitors the students as they progress through their clinical clerkships, ensuring that each student learns all of the critical components of each rotation and masters each core competency.
